OKLAHOMA CITY – Reps. Kevin McDugle, R-Broken Arrow, and Justin Humphrey, R-Lane, today held a press conference responding to findings from a third party investigation regarding the case of death row inmate Richard Glossip. The investigation, conducted on a pro bono basis in part due to the urging of multiple legislators to look into the case, was undertaken by a 30 lawyer team from the Reed Smith law firm assisted by Crowe & Dunlevy of Oklahoma.

"After looking into the case and taking my own measure of the man, I knew Richard Glossip to be innocent, but now an independent investigation of this case backs that up. I believe that the people of Oklahoma deserve a full accounting of what went wrong in this case in a new hearing so we can ensure we are not executing an innocent man," McDugle said.  "That's why my colleagues and I asked for this independent investigation, and why I am so convinced that we need a new hearing in this case to help fix what's been done to this man. Oklahoma should be executing murderers, not innocent hotel managers."

Reed Smith assembled a team of over 30 attorneys, three investigators and two paralegals who spent more than 3,000 hours combined on the investigation. The team spent over 3,000 hours reviewing testimony, interviewing witnesses, examining case files and working to find anything that may have been missed in the initial investigation. According to McDugle and Humphrey, the firm's findings point towards Glossip's innocence.

"Nationally, there are moves afoot to eliminate the death penalty," Humphrey said. "Neither I, nor Rep. McDugle, support that, but if innocent men are put to death without being offered a fresh, properly-conducted trial at which all available evidence is presented for jurors to assess, our system of law and order will inevitably come under attack leaving us all less safe."

McDugle, Humphrey and others are hoping that the findings from the investigation will lead to a new review of the Glossip case. The full findings of the Reed Smith investigative report can be found here.
