OKLAHOMA CITY – Rep. Justin Humphrey, R-Lane, has scheduled an interim study to detail his ideas on restructuring the state's entire criminal justice system.

IS23-025 is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 23, in Room 206 at the State Capitol, 2300 N Lincoln Blvd., before the House Criminal Justice and Corrections Committee, which Humphrey chairs.

The lawmaker has held similar studies in prior years. He said the complexities of the system as well as those who wish to keep the status quo have forced this to be an ongoing discussion.

"There are so many pieces to the criminal justice system that need to be addressed," Humphrey said. "We need to move our district attorney's from a fee-based system where they benefit from prosecuting and incarcerating Oklahomans. We need to address systemic problems within our state prisons that have fostered a culture of wrongdoing against correctional employees and inmates. We need too look at our overall judicial system. We also need to examine some of our laws that at times make the job of law enforcement harder and public safety weaker but also those that work against restoring people to their families and to work once they've paid their debt to society."
