McCall Touts Latest CPAC Rating for OK Legislature

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma House Speaker Charles McCall, R-Atoka, today issued a statement praising the conservative rating for the Oklahoma Legislature after the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) Foundation's Center for Legislative Accountability (CLA) released its 2023 ratings of the voting records of state legislators in all fifty states. Oklahoma was ranked as the second most conservative legislature in the country, trailing only West Virginia. "The most recent CPAC rating comes after almost a decade of hard work to champion conservative principles here in Oklahoma," McCall said. "During my tenure as Speaker, Oklahoma has moved from 16th to second on the list, as we have focused on championing conservative principles in the House, to the benefit of our state and constituents. Legislators currently serving, and those who came before, have contributed to this conservative movement and should be proud of all we have accomplished. I am thankful that my colleagues have helped turn Oklahoma from a state ranked near the bottom in every category, into a growing, thriving state that is moving up the rankings rapidly. That upward movement is a testament to the value of conservative policies, and I am thankful we have laid a strong foundation for future generations to build upon. I appreciate the work that CPAC has done to introduce and support strong conservative legislation both in Oklahoma and across the nation, and look forward to more conservative success for our state in the future." A separate ranking showed Oklahoma to be 18th in the nation for how often Republicans voted together on conservative issues. McCall said that is the result of a large Republican Caucus with diverse membership from across the state. "When you have a Caucus the size of ours here in Oklahoma, you have a lot of voices advocating for their individual districts on the issues," McCall said. "That can lead to nuanced votes and conversations where representatives may not vote for a particular bill based on the will of their constituents, but if the bill were in danger of failing, they would vote to make sure the Caucus priority got across the finish line. With a majority of this size, members have the ability to display their individuality more often than in battleground states, but even so, the legislation coming out of the House has resulted in our body being ranked the second most conservative Legislature in the country. From passing Save Women's Sports, to tax cuts, to the nation's strongest pro-life bills, the Oklahoma House of Representatives is helping to keep Oklahoma the reddest state in the nation. The House has led on issues regarding prohibitions on CRT being taught in the classroom, maximizing pension returns by stopping investments in ESG funds and prohibiting men from using girl's bathrooms. We are proud of accomplishing conservative goals on behalf of our constituents, and will continue to do so both now and in the future." The Center for Legislative Accountability (CLA), an initiative of the CPAC Foundation, is the premier organization for holding lawmakers accountable. The CLA, widely recognized as the "gold standard" for evaluating an elected officials voting record, produces the longest-running conservative congressional scorecard, and their state program is the only one in the nation that scores all 8,000 lawmakers in the 50 states across every policy area. -END- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Contact: Daniel Seitz, House Republican Caucus Communications Director Phone: (405) 962-7649 Email: daniel.seitz@okhouse.gov

STATEMENT: McCall Issues Statement Condemning Bomb Threats Against Schools

Oklahoma House Speaker Charles McCall, R-Atoka, today issued a statement condemning the bomb threats recently called in to multiple Oklahoma schools and asking education stakeholders to tone down political rhetoric and renew their focus on increased student academic outcomes. “First and foremost, I want to condemn the bomb threats leveled against multiple public schools here in Oklahoma this week. Violence, and threats of violence, whether a hoax or legitimate, against our students are completely unacceptable and must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Secondly, I would like to see the political activism surrounding education eliminated, and more targeted action plans focused on raising test scores and increasing education outcomes for our students. Recently, it seems as if 5% of the people are stirring up controversy, while the other 95% just want to see our kids get better test scores and succeed in the classroom. Oklahoma classrooms should not be laboratories for political activism, they should be places where our kids go to learn the basic education skills needed to succeed. In the same way, Oklahoma’s elected leaders should not be adding fuel to the fires of controversy, we should be focused on making sure our kids are getting a good education, and our educational outcomes are improving. Oklahoma’s education ranking is among the lowest in the country for a number of reasons, and that ranking isn’t going to change if we are constantly engaged in a political battle of wills. We must get the focus back on student outcomes, and away from political rhetoric. I’m calling on all involved parties to end the rhetoric and do better for the children of Oklahoma.”

Speaker McCall Responds to Gov. Stitt Lawsuit

Oklahoma House Speaker Charles McCall, R-Atoka, today released the following statement in response to the governor's lawsuit filed against the Speaker and Senate President Pro Tem Greg Treat, R-Oklahoma, regarding tribal compacts: "Today, Gov. Stitt filed the latest in a series of lawsuits that waste taxpayer dollars and attempt to undermine legitimate compact negotiations with our state's federally recognized tribes. A plain reading of the decisions in Treat I and II shows that his legal questions have already been answered by the court and the governor simply fails or refuses to accept the answer and recognize the law. This is further evidenced by the litigation currently filed in the District of Columbia. Rather than accept the Oklahoma Supreme Court’s decision, and work with the Legislature and our state's tribal partners on a way forward, Gov. Stitt has spent tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars on D.C. attorneys in an attempt to give up Oklahoma sovereignty to the Biden Administration in hopes that they will agree with him and undermine Oklahoma law. In his comments to the media, the governor called into question the legitimacy of the special session that was held to override his vetoes regarding legislation extending compacts with our tribal partners. The Legislature's ability to call a special session, and the particular special session call itself, are well within the Legislature's constitutional authority. Both the House and Senate followed the law and the Governor simply does not agree with the result. But the legislators, those closest to all 4 million Oklahomans, know that the citizens are counting on them to find solutions rather than to simply fear monger and cost the state tens of millions of tax dollars that go to important core services like education. Rather than simply allowing compacts to lapse and wasting time, and more importantly taxpayer dollars, on frivolous lawsuits, the governor should focus on ways to work with all parties, including our tribal partners, to find solutions that make sense for our entire state. I look forward to continuing negotiations on tribal compacts with all interested parties, and await the court's decision on the most recently filed lawsuit."
